It's understandable to be cautious when approaching anyone alone, including homeless people. While the vast majority are harmless, there's always a chance of encountering someone unpredictable. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

* Be aware of your surroundings. Trust your gut instinct and avoid approaching someone in a deserted area or at night.

 * Let someone know your plans: If you choose to interact, tell a friend or family member where you're going and when you expect to be back.

* Maintain a safe distance: If the person seems uncomfortable, keep your distance and avoid making physical contact.

*Pray before you go ask for wisdom along with protection, and listen to God with your heart. Praying with the homeless person is an awesome way to connect. However ask first they may not want prayer. Continue praying for them thereafter.

 * Be respectful: A friendly and respectful demeanor goes a long way in positive interactions.

* Be prepared to walk away. If the person seems aggressive or intoxicated, politely excuse yourself and leave

* Go two by two, The Bible verses Mark 6:7–13 describes Jesus sending out his twelve disciples "two by two" and giving them power over unclean spirits. The verse says that Jesus gave the disciples authority to heal, cast out demons, and preach about the kingdom of God, and that they should only take a staff with them, not bread, money, or a bag. The verse also says that the disciples should wear sandals and not put on two tunics.

* We get calls all the time from people wanting to help a homeless person they see on the streets. We tell them to practice wisdom along with knowing their surroundings and making sure other people are around. We suggest that they report the homeless in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York to Homeless Long Island. There are many ways to help without directly approaching someone on the street. For example, if you are homebound and want to help, we need intercessory prayer warriors.

Homeless Long Island does more than give the homeless necessities to make their lives better. We also discuss exit strategies to get them off the streets. The most important thing we do is pray with them. Talk to them about Jesus. Along with an offer to take them to church. If you still want to help them, maybe call us first to discuss a plan.

Hope this blog helps.

God bless
