Do you have a pet that provides emotional support or helps with a disability? Under the Fair Housing Act, Article § 3604(3)(B) – Reasonable Accommodation Act, you have the right to request housing that allows you to keep your support animal—even in buildings with “no pet” policies. To exercise this right, you must provide a letter from a licensed healthcare provider that explains how the animal supports your mental or physical health. Please note: An emotional support animal ID card or vest is not accepted by DSS or most housing providers as valid proof. Only a proper letter from a medical or mental health professional meets the requirement. Facing barriers because your pet isn’t allowed in shelters or housing? You may qualify for a reasonable accommodation that allows you and your support animal to stay together. A doctor’s letter explaining the need for your animal can protect your housing rights. Click below to learn more about what the letter needs to include and how to submit it properly.

Fair Housing Article § 3604(3)(B)
Under the Fair Housing Act, a housing provider must allow a person with a disability to have a service animal as a "reasonable accommodation," meaning they cannot deny housing to someone solely because they need a service animal, and cannot charge extra fees for the animal, as long as the animal is necessary to alleviate the symptoms of their disability; this applies to shelters as well.
