If you find yourself experiencing homelessness in the United States, there are several steps you can take to get help:
Immediate Needs:
Shelter: The National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) recommends calling 211, a free 24/7 service that connects people to local resources like shelters, food banks, and other social services. You can also find shelters and other resources online at SAMHSA's website: https://www.samhsa.gov/
Food: Food banks and pantries can provide free or low-cost groceries. You can find a food bank near you at Feeding America's website: https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank/los-angeles-regional-food-bank
Healthcare: Many homeless shelters and community health centers offer free or low-cost healthcare services. You can find a community health center near you at the Health Resources and Services Administration's website: https://findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov/
Long-Term Solutions:
Housing assistance: There are a number of government programs that can help you find affordable housing. These programs include the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program and the Public Housing program. You can learn more about these programs at HUD's website: https://www.hud.gov/florida
Employment assistance: Many homeless shelters and community organizations offer job training and placement services. You can find these services by contacting your local 211 hotline.
Benefits: You may be eligible for government benefits such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). You can learn more about these benefits at SSA's website: https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/
