We understand that you're in a difficult situation, and we want to help you stay safe and warm. While we can't recommend relying solely on natural heat sources in your car, especially in very cold weather, we can offer some options that can supplement other heating methods or provide some warmth in milder conditions.
Please remember that these methods should not be your primary heat source in freezing temperatures.
Here are some options to consider:
Body heat:
Layer up: Wear multiple thin layers of clothing instead of one thick layer. This traps more air and provides better insulation.
Hand and foot warmers: These disposable warmers activate with air and provide warmth for several hours. You can find them at convenience stores, gas stations, and sporting goods stores.
Exercise: Generate your own heat by doing jumping jacks, squats, or other light exercises. Be careful not to sweat, as this can make you colder later.
Insulation:
Window covers: Reflecting window covers can help trap heat inside your car. You can make your own using cardboard and aluminum foil, or purchase them at auto parts stores.
Blankets and sleeping bags: Wrap yourself in blankets or sleeping bags to retain your body heat.
Reflective materials: Line the floor and seats of your car with blankets, cardboard, or other reflective materials to reflect heat back towards you.
Candles
Important safety reminders:
Never run your car engine for extended periods to heat the car. This is dangerous and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Be aware of the risk of fire. Never use open flames or candles inside your car.
Ventilate your car regularly to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Crack a window slightly every few hours.
Seek shelter from extreme cold weather. If possible, go to a homeless shelter or other warm location during the coldest parts of the day or night.
