Risks of homeless living in abandoned buildings.

Updated: Apr 23, 2023

Living in abandoned buildings is not a safe or secure option for homeless individuals. While it may provide temporary shelter, there are several risks associated with occupying abandoned buildings.

Firstly, abandoned buildings are often structurally unsound and may contain hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead paint. These materials can pose serious health risks to anyone who comes into contact with them. Additionally, abandoned buildings are often not maintained, which means that they may lack basic amenities like running water and electricity, making it difficult to maintain basic hygiene and sanitation.

Moreover, abandoned buildings can also be dangerous due to their lack of security. They can be a haven for criminal activity, including drug use, theft, and violence, putting occupants at risk of harm. In addition.

It is important to note that living in abandoned buildings is illegal and can result in arrest or eviction. It is also not a long-term solution to homelessness, and can actually hinder individuals' efforts to secure stable housing and employment in the future.

Therefore, it is important for homeless individuals to seek out safe and secure housing options, such as shelters, transitional housing programs, or supportive housing programs, which can provide the necessary resources and support to help them get back on their feet.

Other problems the homeless have living in an abandoned building especially in colder climates, is fire. The Homeless will use candles and sometimes start a little fire in the building causing the place to burn down and possibly get injured themselves. the buildings may not have adequate exits or fire safety measures, making them particularly hazardous in the event of said fire or other emergency.
